Heavybit Welcomes New Member: exe.dev

Heavybit is excited to welcome the developer cloud startup exe.dev to our portfolio. exe.dev lets developers quickly stand up affordable, secure virtual machines without the need for complex configuration or authentications, or for an enormous cloud bill.

As AI-powered software development has become more prominent, so too have powerful large language models that require increasingly large amounts of compute resources for training, fine tuning, and inference.

Amid hardware scarcity and ever-climbing compute prices, developers who simply need a secure place to build and host software find themselves painted into a corner: Either jump through many hoops of security and authentication configurations or pay an eye-watering cloud bill.

Why We’re Excited

exe.dev is built by two highly experienced, multi-time founders: Josh Bleecher Snyder (Card.io, Canopy Climate) and David Crawshaw (Tailscale). The startup is the result of their comprehensive experience building successful companies around products that developers genuinely need, and of both founders’ clear-eyed vision of the future of technology.

For better or worse, AI has greatly flattened the barrier to entry for building software, enhancing the capability of experienced developers and helping non-technical users vibe-code their own projects. But by opening the floodgates in some areas of development, AI has highlighted how other aspects of software infrastructure have failed to evolve with the times.

The exe.dev platform elegantly provides both developer compute and safe, secure hosting by making SSH not simply the means of remote login, but rather, a unified interface that bypasses the need to manage individual authentications. Deploying, managing, and provisioning all take place at the terminal, which makes setting up a virtual machine for compute resources a blissfully painless experience that gets developers building and hosting quickly.

David Crawshaw is a longtime computer programmer and multi-time startup founder. He’s served tours of duty at NICTA and Google, and co-founded the successful VPN startup Tailscale.

Josh Bleecher Snyder

Co-Founder

A serial startup founder, Josh Bleecher Snyder previously co-founded card.io and Canopy Climate. He has also served tours of duty at Tailscale and AdMob and contributed extensively to the Go programming language.
